News from Selwyn Room 5

Welcome to room 5 Selwyn Satellite class.

Tena Koutou,

Here in the Selwyn satellite class there are 5 children, 3 boys and 2 girls with an age range of 6-14 years.  Over the past three weeks we have been getting to know each other and talked about our favourite things to do and play.

Whaea Anna is our teacher and we have 2 amazing teacher aides Raewyn and Kim, they help and support our learning and play. We are learning the kaupapa of room 5 which helps keep us safe and happy.  Two of our goals this term are to use our manners; saying please and thank you and the second goal, sharing with others. We try really hard during box work time, and we are rewarded and praised for our efforts.

Our school wide theme for this term is water.  We have read books about water and why it is very important. We are learning a song about the water cycle and because of the beautiful warm weather water play is a highlight for us, lets not forget the bubbles!

We visited our school library and for some of us we met Dawn the librarian for the first time. We will be visiting the library on a regular basis so we can learn the kaupapa of the library and read some of the fantastic books!  Mr French is clever! He’s made some very impressive wooden toys for kids to play on. Providing we remember to use our manners and return what we borrow, Mr French said we are welcome to play with the equipment.

“Together we learn, care and achieve”

We’re also preparing for our Art Expo, doing lots of artwork.

Maths and Buddy Reading has been going on steadily and we’ve made good progress in our reading and counting.

Community Integration for our term was our visit to Amorangi Rotorua Steam and Settlers Museum. It was in keeping with our theme  – Movement and Concepts. We enjoyed turning all the wheels, climbing up the stairs and trying out all the machines that people used many years ago. The highlight was our train ride, lots of fun for us. We’re also having our Fun Run and Christmas Party this term. We can’t wait for them both!!

Term 3 2018

We’ve had lots of interesting learning this term, in keeping with our theme for the Term- Relationships in the Community.

Reading in the mainstream                                          Jono and music                          Numicon maths

Gross motor skills                                     Making pizza                                                              Masterchef junior

Early words programme                                                Selwyn library                        Foam with Alysa our SLT

A highlight for us was when we had a SPCA dog, Max and his trainer show us how to be safe around dogs. Max was such a clever dog and showed us many tricks.

We also learnt how to be healthy at school and home by learning how to wash our hands properly. The GloBoxes given to us by Health Promoting Schools was cool!! When we didn’t wash our hands properly, we could see bugs on our hands under a special UV light. We also practised brushing our teeth the right way. It is important to have nice breath around people.

Two of our class mates went to the Ball for the first time. The Pasifika theme was lovely and they had heaps of fun.

All 5 of us are riding now, a great celebration especially for one of friends who has begun riding after a very long time. Horse riding is one of our all-time favourite activities.

We also had lots of fun making poi, learning Māori kupu and listening to Māori stories. We get to spend more time with Matua Aiden this term.

Term 2 2018

In Term 2 we learnt different things.  Buddy reading continued with Mrs. Jones’ class. We loved horse riding. RDA was the highlight of the term and now we can ride confidently. We also visited the Tunohopu Marae with Selwyn School and played Rippa Rugby. It was a first for us and heaps of fun. We so love Bucket Time with Alysa –it’s like a magic show!! We’re adding to our artwork collection for our expo next term. We’re also working hard to reach our IEP goals.

Term 1 2018

Kia ora and welcome back to the New Year!

We’re excited to be in our new classroom at Selwyn, Room Five.

Ruma Rima has lots of fun things planned for this term. We’ll be having our picnic both by Selwyn and Kea Street. Our Assemblies have a Pyjama dress up day and disco planned for the term. We’ll be going to MIGS Gym to make our muscles stronger

Besides this we’ll be doing lots of other learning.

Box Work is very popular with us, we love working on our Early Words, Reading and Math skills. Many of us have become better readers. This term our theme is “personal health and physical development”. We’re learning to stay safe in the sun and water. We’re also learning about healthy foods for us, especially on a sunny picnic day.

There’s also lots of play outside with our other school mates. All of us love the adventure playground, climbing the rock wall, rope ladder, balancing. We also love trying out the stilts and wooden wheelie carts.

We continue to have Matua Aiden and Jono for our superb music sessions. We’ll enjoy the sun while it lasts!

In term 1 we were really busy with lots of fun learning. Buddy reading was th highlight for term 1. We so enjoyed making new friends and going for assembly and playing with the others in the playground. Alysa has been doing lots of work with us. We also visited Te Aka Mauri - the new public library and enjoyed playing with the robotic cubelets. We also stretched all our muscles at MIGS Gym and had heaps of fun on the equipment.
