Room 5 at Selwyn Primary, (Satellite Unit) has 4 students - two boys and two girls of mixed ethnicities. We have one Classroom Teacher, Savi and two Teacher Aides, Raewyn and Tracey. Zac is our release teacher. Students enjoy Waiata and te reo Māori with Matua Aiden and music with Jono. The dance programme with Clare is another favourite. Sensory Activities facilitated by Lisa and Sensory Stories shared by Judith are other wonderful experiences for our students. We also have a team of specialists working closely with us - Jenna and Alysa are our Speech and Language Therapists, Brigid, Occupational Therapist, Chris our Physiotherapist and Michelle our Vision and Mobility Therapist.
This Year we focus on ‘Health and PE’. In Term One our topic is ‘Personal Health and Physical Development.’ In Term Two we learn about ‘Healthy Communities and Environments’. Term Three we cover ‘Relationships with other people’ and in Term Four we concentrate on ‘Movement Concepts and Motor Skills’.
Teaching and Learning programmes are designed to effectively meet the students’ needs through the Individual Education Plans (IEPs), the expanded Level One curriculum goals based on the Central Regions Special School Cluster (CRSSC) and Key Competencies Pathways. The students are engaged through group and one on one learning experiences. Another focal point for our class will be Communication using Core boards and the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and also increasing their use of verbal language when able to.
Opportunities are given for Community Integration through Riding for the Disabled (RDA), swimming, Mid Island Gym Sports (MIGS), Library visits, Flip Out, Polynesian Pools and hikoi to the shops and parks nearby.
Room five has an open door policy. Parents/ caregivers and whānau are welcome to visit anytime, email or phone. The classroom teacher communicates daily on their child’s day and progress through the Home Books and Class Dojo posts.
