We are a class of mostly non-verbal children with high to very-high needs. Our class currently consists of 2 boys and 3 girls. We have 3 Teacher Aids, Sue M, Brenda and Sue I, as well as one Teacher, Jenn. Every fortnight we also have a Release Teacher, Dawn come in.
Our class has a strong emphasis on communication this year through the use of Augmented and Alternative Communication (AAC) and encouragement to use oral language when able. As the students are working below and within Level One of the New Zealand Curriculum we also use the Key Competencies Pathways, CRSSAC and Te Whariki (ECE Curriculum) documents to guide our learning.
Each of the students in our class will work one on one with staff at various times each day for their individualised programmes. This is mainly done in the form of ‘box work’ where each student has a box of activities appropriate to their individual ability and guided by their Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals. We have specialists in Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language, Maori, Music and Arts also visiting our class regularly (weekly or fortnightly) this year.
