So this term we have participated in the Unison Lake Safety programme, where we learned essential water safety skills. We were taught how to in and out of kayaks and how to paddle, we also learned how to save someone if they got into trouble in the water.
As part of our exploration of Maori culture, we went to the Rotorua museum to learn about traditional Maori games. We were taught how to make poi and learned how to play the game Horohopu. We will continue to practice this game now we understand the rules.
We have also been continuing to use the ipads for academic learning, here is Avalon, Jay-Dee and Letesha making some awesome books using the book creator app. We are continue to work hard at all our mahi, Thomas worked so hard he earned a habits badge at assembly, ka pai Thomas.
Term 3 2017:
We are back into term 3, Topic Study is about Hatupatu and Kurangaituku (Bird Woman). We look forward to learning all about Hatupatu and the Bird Woman.
We have our School Production on Thursday 14 September. Our act is called 'The clowns comeback', we can't wait to perform! l We have RDA every Monday and this term we are learning to take care of the horse and ride independently! Below are just a few activities thus far. Here is Thomas and Harrison brushing and saddling up the horses at RDA.
We are working hard towards our IEP goals! Here we are talking about our progress and working hard at maths.
We are lucky to have Lisa from our Taupo satellite class every Wednesday afternoon. We use this work to build on our creative writing.
Every Tuesday and Friday we have PE with mainstream, we work hard with our Room 4 buddies! This term we are focusing on team building games and working together!
Term 2:
Kia ora Whanau,
We have been very busy this term with RDA, cross country, swimming and have lots of fun in Room 7.
We took part in the Western Heights Primary School Sports day, we were outstanding, all students ran well and really pushed themselves. During the same week we had the annual Kea Street Cross Country at the Tree Trust. Thank-you to whanau who were able to come and watch.
We have been attending RDA every Monday and have learned lots of new skills on the horse, here are some photos.
This term we have been working hard on our reading, we have group reading, independent reading and buddy reading sessions! We go to our school and the public library, where we can choose our own books. Some students are working through the Early Words programme, and we are seeing lots of success using this.

Welcome to Term 1 at Western Heights Primary Satellite class.
We have had so much fun during Term one. We have attended MIGS with our instructor Jo, we have done lots of work on warming up, using the beam for balancing in different directions and hand eye co-ordination. We have been participating in PE with room 4, each week we have are assigned to a buddy who helps us with each activity!
We had superhero day in recognition of World Down Sydrome day! Angela made us some awesome balloon outfits!!!
Every student in our school has their own Ipad, we are using these for learning, we can do maths, writing and reading on them! Our class is also using them to connect to our ClassDojo page, which our whanau love viewing.
Our theme this year is ‘Our Place Our Legends’, we have been focusing on the story of Hinemoa and Tutanekai. We have visited Hinemoa point to see the marae. We retold the story through dance and performed at assembly.
We were lucky to have the Maori theatre company come and perform at Kea Street, we all enjoyed the performance!
Birthday celebrations:
We are busy with our mahi! This term we are focusing on our oral language and phonics programme, writing and maths. We are attending MIGS gymnastics with our instructor Jo, we really enjoy this. We also go swimming and join room 4 mainstream class for PE each week.
